Visit to Stormont - 22nd March 2010

Pupils in 5L and 4L who study Citizenship went on a very interesting and useful visit to the Northern Ireland Assembly building at Stormont on Tuesday 16th March. We were given an excellent and informative presentation where we told of how the Assembly was set up, how it operates and what aspects of life in Northern Ireland it is responsible for. We learnt about the different political parties, who the leaders are and the special jobs some MLAs have on the Executive. We actually got into the chamber where a debate was going on about setting priorities for European funding.

After lunch we got a tour of some of the other parts of the building including the impressive Great Hall, the old Senate chamber and the famous stairway. Sammy Wilson, the MP and MLA for East Antrim (where our school is situated) was coming out of the chamber as we were passing so he came to talk to us. After a short informal conversation he agreed to pose for a photograph on the stairway with our young people.

It was a great day out and also very educational for all of us – staff included! We got lovely weather so we finished off by having a short walk around the front of the building before getting back to the cars to head back to school.
