Healthy Day In - 10th March 2010

As part of the Health4Life project in Jordanstown Schools visitors from the Health Promotion Agency, Colin Glen Trust and chefs from Ryan’s Restaurant treated parents, staff and invited guests to a ‘Healthy Day In’. Throughout the day pupils and parents participated in a range of interactive workshops.

The first workshop focused on healthy eating. In a cooking demonstration the chefs used healthy local ingredients to make chilli chicken stir fry, fruit kebabs and an Italian risotto. Their dishes were yummy and a hit with everyone who tried them.

Lori Hartmann from Colin Glen Trust took a session on growing herbs and vegetables at home. Under her watchful eye all the pupils planted seeds that they will continue to look after at home. At times it was mucky rather than green fingers on show!

The dangers of alcohol consumption, especially its effects on various parts of the body, was the theme of the Health Promotion Agency’s workshop. Everyone found this to be very interesting especially when they tried the simulation spectacles.

Jordanstown School’s PE teacher encouraged pupils and parents to ‘get active’ demonstrating a range of exercises which can be practiced at home.

Pupils from the school prepared a ‘parent pack’ that included healthy recipes, ideas for healthy lunch boxes and information on healthy lifestyle initiatives in school. Parents and guests were given the opportunity to taste ‘one the pupils had made earlier’ of the Healthy lunch box ideas.

The GCSE Home Economics pupils prepared a healthy lunch of wholesome corn or minestrone soup served with wheaten bread.

There were various exhibitions and demonstrations around the school and the pupils were shocked when they looked at the ‘sugar table’ and discovered there was the equivalent of 18 sugar cubes in one bottle of coke!

The school are grateful for the assistance given by Emma McElhone Health Promotion Agency, Lori Hartman Colin Glen Trust, Jason Hamill and Gerard Campbell from Ryans Restaurant

And we look forward to putting all we learned into practice. Health4life is a continuing project within the school and now we hope with parents as well.
