Peter Wins National Competition - 30th June 2009
Peter Donoghue has won the Active Kids Get Cooking Special Challenge 2009. This year's cooking competition challenged children and young people from all over the UK to devise recipes for a spectacular breakfast inspired from around the world. Super chef Jamie Oliver judged the London final and tested Peter’s dish for taste, nutrition and early-morning appeal.
Peter entered his breakfast idea in the Active Kids Get Cooking Special Challenge as part of Jordanstown School for Hearing and Visually impaired’s school cookery lessons. Peter came up with the idea of “Magnificent Morning Mushrooms” which made it to the finals because it was found to be both creative and tasty whilst also following healthy eating guidelines.
Scientific studies show that children who start the day with a healthy breakfast are more focused during the school day and find it easier to concentrate.
Peter visited the Sainsbury’s head office in London where his recipe was cooked and tested by a panel of food experts including Sainsbury’s ambassador, Jamie Oliver. Peter said: “The competition has helped me learn about why breakfast is good for you and what I should try to eat more of I’m so happy that I won the Active Kids Get Cooking competiton. It was so exciting meeting Jamie and telling him all about my recipe.”
The Active Kids Get Cooking Special Challenge final took place on 25th June and Sainsbury’s Holywood Exchange store manager also attended the event. He said: “The competition is a great way to emphasise the importance of kids learning cooking skills. I was backing Peter all the way to win and he made us proud.”
